The Fort, a coral rag building older than the colonial era, still gives onto the old harbour. Mombasa means the place of war in Swahili, though most days here feel like a truce. Fort Jesus, the dhow at Nyali and the blue holes of Bamburi make it Kenya’s most rewarding short break.
